Too many animals in New South Wales are at risk from animal cruelty

It’s clear that the community wants ethically and sustainably produced food.

We know that the current system in NSW which is meant to protect animals is broken. The Greens have a plan to strengthen animal welfare. We will establish an independent office of animal welfare under the Department of Premier and Cabinet to monitor, enforce and drive change in animal welfare law and practice in NSW.

We want effective legislation and action on a range of issues from banning battery caged egg production and de-breaking to the inhumane use of sow stalls and farrowing crates in pig farming. We need to licence activities and enforce regulations relating to animal welfare and food production so that the community’s expectations are realised.

Animal welfare is an increasing priority for many people in NSW and across the country. 83% support or strongly support laws to ensure food animals have access to the outdoors, companions, natural materials and enough space to carry out their instinctive behaviour.
