Community Recognition: Humans of Newtown Book Launch

Celebrating the Humans of Newtown book launch.

Ms JENNY LEONG (Newtown) [5.06 p.m.]: On Saturday 5 September the Humans of Newtown book was launched amongst market stalls, visual arts and live music at the Newtown Social Club. The book, a compilation of the work of local resident and photo journalist Jo Wallace, captures the stories of individuals who make up the diverse Newtown community. On Sunday 6 September I participated in the King Street Crawl—a celebration of the live music venues, local musicians, bars, restaurants, shops and creative industries that line King Street and surrounds. As part of the crawl I dropped by The Commune, Parliament on King, had a couple of beers at The Union watching the Daphne Rawling Band, dropped into the Townie, stopped by Midnight Special for Melodie Nelson and then was lucky enough to catch The Preatures' secret gig at The Bank. I thank everyone involved in making this event a massive success. Sadly I could not make it to all of the gigs. I look forward to working with this community to keep Newtown open, safe and weird.
