Greens MP Says WestConnex Offers Unacceptable Alternatives

NSW Greens spokesperson on WestConnex Jenny Leong MP has called on the Minister for WestConnex to stop pitting communities against each other with false solutions, in response to today’s announcement that the proposed mid-point tunnel site for the M4-M5 Link will be at Darley Road and not next to the Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt campus.

Jenny Leong MP said:

“WestConnex is a damaging, destructive and wasteful disaster of a project. It will bring in more traffic, not less. It will ramp up pollution and won’t address Sydney’s congestion problems.

“It’s despicable to see the Liberal Minister for WestConnex standing with the Labor Federal Member Anthony Albanese to claim this as a win when it was clear from the beginning that building a tunnel site near a school was a preposterous suggestion.

“The Greens will continue to stand with the community who have made it clear from the beginning that both of these ‘solutions’ are totally unsuitable.

”It’s unacceptable for the government to put the community in a position where they have to choose between a rock and a hard place.

“No community should be subjected to mass disruption, noise, pollution or dangerous traffic on this scale for a project that we know will fail.

“This announcement by the Minister for WestConnex in relation to the Leichhardt mid-point tunnel site is just the latest example of the planning on the run we’ve seen right throughout this disaster of a tollroad project.

“It’s important for the community to remember that this 8-lane monstrosity is not a given. Far from it. The draft designs haven’t been released, nor the planning approval granted, nor any funding secured."
