To the NSW Transport Minister,
Everyone should have safe and easy access to public transport.
But without much-needed accessibility upgrades to Lewisham Station, this isn't possible.
People who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids, elderly community members, and parents or carers with prams shouldn’t have to struggle up and down steep stairs to get on and off platforms.
We call on the state government to urgently fund an upgrade that would make Lewisham Station accessible for all - and to prioritise making all stations in NSW fully accessible.
Make Lewisham Station accessible!
Every day, thousands of people in our Newtown electorate rely on public transport to get to and from work, school, and beyond. But for Lewisham community members with accessibility needs, this isn’t so simple.
Lewisham Station is one of the last stations in our local area without a lift, so people who live with disability or use wheelchairs or other mobility aids, parents or carers with prams, and elderly community members have to struggle up and down steep stairs just to get to the platforms.
Everyone should have the right to use public transport easily and safely. But without urgent accessibility upgrades to Lewisham Station, many people can’t access this right.
After a hard-fought community campaign, Petersham Station is now fully accessible, with two lifts and a ramp connecting the station entrance to the footbridge. And accessibility upgrades are underway at Erskineville, St Peters, and Redfern stations, while similar works are being planned for Stanmore Station.
Our local community won these upgrades through strong, united campaigns. It’s time for us to come together again to demand upgrades that would make Lewisham Station accessible for everyone.
