M5 WestConnex leak shows urgent need for transparency

The latest WestConnex leak regarding the cost and time blow out of the WestConnex New M5 shows the urgent need for full transparency regarding this now toxic project, says NSW Greens spokesperson on WestConnex and Member for Newtown, Jenny Leong MP and Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC and NSW Greens spokesperson on Transport.

Dr Mehreen Faruqi:

“The fact that the M5 is severely over budget and behind schedule is not surprising at all, given this Government’s incompetence and their propensity to waste public money.

“The secrecy and the fact they’re about sell Westconnex demands the need for transparency is now more urgent than ever. That’s why I’m calling on the Government to release all papers related to the tender and sale process for this toll road.

“Wesconnex fails on all counts, social, environmental, economic and transport, and yet they have completely ignored the community and continued with this monster toll road.

Jenny Leong MP:

“There is no denying that this polluting tollroad project is now completely off the rails – in the last 48 hours we have seen a high court decision against the discredited compulsory acquisition process and now with this leak that there’s a massive cost and time overrun on Stage 2.

“Last week we discovered that Planning Minister Roberts secretly approved Stage 3 even though the plans for this exorbitantly expensive and destructive stage are just indicative.

“The Liberals are scrabbling trying to get to August so they can do what they do best – remove all responsibility by selling off the Sydney Motorway Corporation and further advancing their privatisation agenda.

“The Greens are calling for Labor and all the NSW Upper House crossbenches to support our call for papers to ensure the immediate release of all the sale documents.
