Jenny Leong Joins Parliamentary Apology to the 78ers

The NSW Parliament has finally offered a formal and long-overdue apology to the 78ers, the participants of the first Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney on June 24, 1978.

NSW Greens spokesperson for Sexuality and Gender Identity and Member for Newtown Jenny Leong made a speech that called on the NSW Police to join the Parliament and apologise for the violence and intimidation perpetrated by NSW police on that night.

“It is a significant step that today we are issuing an apology from this parliament – and while I recognise the comments made around the apology from the Herald yesterday it is significant to see that they have also begun the process of apologising. There remains one responsible party that has not taken that step yet and that is the NSW Police and I can commit to you that I will continue to work with you until we see the day that the NSW Police apologises.
