Private Interests Continue to Dictate the NSW Transport Agenda

Greens NSW MP and Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC and Greens NSW MP, Member for Newtown and WestConnex spokesperson, Jenny Leong, have reacted to the NSW Budget announcements on funding for WestConnex, the F6, Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link.

Dr Faruqi said:

“It’s a bleak and expensive future for commuters in Sydney. The Liberals have delivered yet another NSW Budget that locks the people of Sydney into a future of privatised motorways. Generations of Sydneysiders to come will feel the Liberals’ love of privatisation in their hip pockets.

“The billions committed to toll roads does nothing for the people of NSW. All it does is fill the coffers of private tolling companies, for whom the ever tightening noose of motorways around Sydney is a lucrative business.

“It’s clear that private interests continue to dictate the NSW Liberal-National Government’s transport agenda. From these toll roads to ripping up existing rail lines for the privatised Metro, the needs of the public fall by the wayside every time,” she concluded.

Jenny Leong MP, Member for Newtown said:

“This Liberal budget sees even more money poured into deliver the polluting WestConnex tollroad disaster – when this is not what the community needs or wants, and when we all know building more roads will not solve our congestion problems.

“WestConnex was sold to the community as a way to connect Western Sydney to the airport and the port, but with no real funds to deliver the Sydney Gateway in this budget, the Liberals are again failing to deliver on their own flawed promise. What is the point of spending billions on a road that requires people in Western Sydney to pay exorbitant tolls to drive in a tunnel under the Inner West?
