The latest on accessibility upgrades at our local stations

After years of advocating alongside locals for station upgrades and improved accessibility at our local train stations, we're excited to see that some major works have taken place!

Our Inner West train stations are now well on their way to becoming more accessible, safe, and user-friendly, and better servicing the needs of our community.

For local resident Chris, the new lifts and ramps at Petersham station have "opened up my world."

The Petersham station upgrade is now complete, with:

  • two new lifts connecting the existing footbridge to the Terminus Street entrance and the station platform
  • a new access ramp and stairs from the Trafalgar Street station entrance to the existing footbridge
  • upgrade work to the existing footbridge and stairs
  • a new accessible parking space adjacent to the Terminus Street lift
  • a formalised kiss and ride area on Terminus Street
  • new bicycle parking on both sides of the station
  • improved amenities such as new male and female ambulant toilet, a new family accessible toilet, CCTV and lighting.

The Erskineville station upgrade is underway, and includes:

  • A new pedestrian crossing and footbridge at Bridge Street, with lift and stairs connecting the new footbridge with station platforms
  • A new lift from the existing concourse to Platform 1
  • New facilities, including family accessible, and male and female ambulant toilets, and accessible water fountain, bicycle hoops, and canopies at station platforms to provide better weather protection
  • A new accessible parking space and kiss and ride spaces on Bridge Street
  • Improvements to CCTV, lighting and wayfinding signage, and upgrades to pedestrian pathways throughout the station precinct

The Erskineville community fought hard for a Southern entrance to the station.

St Peters station is also undergoing work, including:

  • Two new lifts to provide access to the station platforms
  • New facilities, including a new family accessible toilet, new bicycle hoops and new and upgraded platform tactiles to help customers with visual impairment
  • New kiss and ride spaces
  • New canopies at the station platforms to provide better weather protection
  • Improvements to CCTV, lighting and wayfinding signage, and upgrades to pedestrian pathways throughout the station precinct

Finally, planning for upgrades to Stanmore station* is underway, including:

  • two lifts providing access to all platforms
  • family and easily accessible toilets on Platforms 1/2
  • accessible ramp from the station to Trafalgar Street
  • regrading of the station underpass
  • regraded station entrance and concourse on Douglas Street
  • kiss and ride bay on Douglas Street
  • new accessible parking space on Douglas Street.

*Transport for NSW is asking for community feedback on the plan between Tuesday 1 February to Tuesday 15 February 2022.
