Today NSW Greens Aboriginal Justice and Police Spokesperson, David Shoebridge MP, and Member for Newtown and NSW Greens Human Rights spokesperson, Jenny Leong MP, expressed serious concern at actions taken by the police in an attempt to shut down a peaceful protest marking the tragic death of Aboriginal boy TJ Hickey in Redfern.
The matter is in the NSW Supreme Court this morning at 10am.
David Shoebridge MP said:
“TJ Hickey died tragically as a result of a police chase in Redfern and every year since his death this action has taken place in Redfern. This latest attempt by the police to use the courts to shut this important annual event down is unacceptable.
“The Greens have long stood with this community in their fight for justice and will continue to do so.
Jenny Leong MP said:
“The local community and social justice activists have the right to gather peacefully to commemorate TJ Hickey’s death and to commit to keep up the fight for justice.”
“The right to peaceful assembly is a basic expression of Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – this right needs to be upheld.”
