Safe Schools an Essential Program

Media Release - 6 November 2015

The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) is promoting a campaign against the Safe Schools Coalition program around Australia. Greens NSW Sexuality and Gender Diversity Spokesperson Jenny Leong says that the program is an essential service that provides support for vulnerable students and their families.

She says: “We are disappointed but not surprised to see yet another scare campaign by the ACL targeting an important service for the LGBTIQ community.”

“The Greens are proud supporters of the Safe Schools Program, and feel that ensuring our young people feel safe and included at school is key to their wellbeing.

“Safe Schools provides support and inclusion for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, school staff and families.

“It is an important tool for the prevention of bullying and discrimination. It is a positive scheme that should continue to receive government support.

“It is disappointing to see that much of the opposition to Safe Schools is due to misleading information about what the program involves.

“Research tells us that many young people who are victims of transphobic or homophobic abuse or bullying will attempt self-harm. The Greens believe that it is essential that those young people are supported within their school communities.

“Safe Schools is an evidence-based program that makes available indispensable resources that assist schools to create a supportive environment.

“The Greens have always stood up for full equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) people in our community, and for a society that celebrates and encourages diversity. And that’s what we’re telling members of the ACL when they email us.

“We will always take a position that seeks to eliminate discrimination and advance equality.
